Faro

There's plenty to do and see in the ancient city of Faro and a visit to the old part of the city, surrounded still by the Roman walls, is a must. Visit the 13th century cathedral, and climb up the tower for the best views. Faro also boasts plenty of attractive shops and restaurants.

For nature lovers, Faro is the home of the Ria Formosa lagoon, a nature reserve of over 17,000 hectares and a stopping place for hundreds of different birds during the spring and autumn migratory periods.

If lazing in the sun is more your thing, the beach is only 7km distance from the city. And Albufeira, a picturesque white-washed clifftop old town, which is one of the Algarve's most popular resorts with its fishing village looks and superb sweeping beach is easily accessible from the airport.

And if you're a golfer - well, you're spoilt for choice, with many top quality courses within easy reach of the city. Try Castro Marim Golf (281 510330), an 18-hole course on rolling hills close to Spanish border; no handicap required. Golfe Clube de Tavira, Campo de Golfe de Benamor (281 320880) is just outside Tavira; handicap certificates required.

Airport information

Faro airport is a short distance from the city, but your journey may take some time due to the road links to the city centre.

By bus:
The EVA Bus No 14 or 16 leaves from directly outside the terminal to EVA Hotel in Faro Town; journey takes 20-25 mins; cost EUR 1.65 from the driver.

By taxi:
